We do both, and we are not going to pretend they are identical. Fried food and time are enemies. If you know which dishes hold up, delivery is genuinely as good as eating in — and if you do not, you end up blaming the kitchen for physics.
What travels well
Saucy, braised and stir-fried dishes. Beef & Broccoli, Pepper Steak, Mongolian Beef, Chicken & Broccoli. These are already wet, so ten minutes in a box changes very little.
Noodles. Lo Mein arrives more or less exactly as it left. It is the most delivery-proof thing we make.
Rice dishes. Fried Rice holds heat better than almost anything else because of its density.
The wings. Our glaze sets rather than staying wet, so Han’s Style Wings stay crisp longer than a typical sauced wing. This is not an accident.
What is better eaten within ten minutes
Anything fried in a light coating. Sweet & Sour Chicken, Orange Chicken and General Tso’s are at their peak roughly ninety seconds out of the fryer. They are still good on delivery. They are outstanding at the counter.
Cheese Puffs and egg rolls. Same reason. Crisp shells and steam do not coexist for long.
If you are ordering these for delivery, one trick genuinely helps: ask for the sauce on the side in the order notes. We will do it, and the coating stays crisp until you are ready.
How to make delivery better
- Order for when you will actually eat. Food waiting on your counter is the same as food waiting in a car.
- Open the boxes as soon as they arrive. Trapped steam is what turns crisp into soft. Lids off, and the difference is real.
- Skip the ice-cold drink pickup. Not a food issue, just an ordering one — drinks travel fine, so add them.
How to make pickup better
- Order ahead rather than at the counter. Everything at Hunan King is made to order, so a walk-in order is a walk-in wait.
- Give yourself the honest amount of time. Twenty to thirty minutes is real for most orders. On a Friday at 7pm, take the longer number.
- Grab a jar of chili oil while you are standing there. It is behind the register.
The short answer
If you are ordering fried dishes and you can get there in ten minutes, pick it up. If you are ordering stir-fries, noodles or rice, delivery costs you nothing in quality.
Either way, start the order online rather than over the phone — you can see the whole menu, and nothing gets misheard.
